New Shrimp Farm Opens in Strathmore

Waterford Farms has recently open it’s facilities just East of Strathmore in Wheatland County.

Waterford Farms is a first of it’s kind large-scale commercial shrimp farm in Alberta. The farms goal is to produce 2.5 million shrimp per year, with their target market being restaurants or supermarkets.

The mission of Waterford is to produce locally raised shrimp in a sustainable way, and to reduce the carbon footprint the demand for shrimp has in Canada.

Almost all Canadian shrimp supply comes from East Asia where the shrimp are typically harvested in the ocean, and then shipped to Canada, making their environmental footprint large. Canada’s demand for shrimp also impacts environmental concerns such as over-fishing or introducing disease into the ocean population.

Waterford’s owner, Keith Driver, hopes their undertaking will fill a niche need in a economically and environmentally responsible way.
